Not all painting quotes are created equal.
When it comes to choosing a painter, many people base their decision-making primarily on price. And we get it.
It’s not easy to pass up a cheaper option. However, a smaller price tag can be deceptive, and in the long term may cost more than expected.
We’ve put together a quick guide for those seeking a painter for their project. Wall Treats is a premium option, and we’re never the cheapest. But we do know our stuff, and we have the experience, awards, and testimonials to back it up. We’re all too well aware of the issues that can come along with a subpar paint job—read along to find out what you should be considering when you pore over your painting quotes. It might not be what you think!
Liability
Knowing that you’re covered if something goes wrong provides peace of mind, and we think that’s worth a significant amount! Wall Treats, and other reputable painting companies, carry public liability insurance to ensure that any loss or damage will be paid for and sorted with no cost and minimum stress to yourself.
We also hold ourselves to the highest health and safety standards, fulfilling all obligations laid-out in legislation and going above and beyond to minimise the potential for damage or harm.
Accountability
If you have people working in or on your home, you need them to be accountable to the contract you signed and what they promised. This is a common complaint for any trades service users—the project is not getting done to the quality or timeframe that was assured, and there doesn’t seem to be much they can do about it.
Communication is key here—while things don’t always go to plan, a good contractor will take responsibility, make a plan to get things done in a satisfactory manner, and keep you well and truly in the loop.
How can you tell how accountable a painting provider will be while you’re looking at quotes? This one might come down to reviews. Find out what other people thought of their professionalism and punctuality, if you can. You can also ask the provider about how they handle roadblocks and delays, and how they hold themselves accountable to you as the property owner.
Credentials and experience
We know that qualifications aren’t the be all and end all of skill, but they are a good indication that someone has the knowledge and experience to do a good job. And when you’re making decisions like choosing a painting provider, they’re certainly something to consider.
Master Painters NZ is the national representative body, and a painter being registered with them is a good sign. If you’re looking for a high-end finish for your beloved property, consider whether the painter in question has won any Master Painter awards. These indicate a dedication to excellence!
Specific skill sets
No two houses are the same, but they can certainly be grouped by their similarities! A painter accustomed to painting weatherboard houses in light colours may not know how to handle a different substrate, a darker colour, or a more complicated project. There’s nothing wrong with a narrow area of expertise, but it’s certainly something to consider when you’re making decisions.
Take a look in the gallery or portfolio of any provider you’re interested in. Have they painted houses that look like yours? Do they have a wide variety of successful work? Our team is constantly expanding their knowledge base to include new materials—check out this recent Abodo cladding project!
